The series follows artful dodger and anti-hero John Yossarian (Christopher Abbott), a US Air Force bombardier furious that thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him, and that his own army keeps increasing the number of missions he must fly to complete his service. George Clooney’s version of the anti-war satirical masterpiece is “beautifully shot, thoughtfully written and incredibly well acted” (the Independent) and succeeds where it was believed impossible, having been dubbed an unfilmable novel. As its name suggests, the premise is the bureaucratic, paradoxical rule Catch-22, which considers a willingness to fly dangerous combat missions a mark of insanity, yet a request to be relieved from duty on the grounds of insanity to be a process of a rational and therefore sane mind. Based on Joseph Heller’s seminal novel of the same name, Catch-22 is a satirical dark comedy set in the Mediterranean theatre of World War II.
